World ORS Day 2023: Simple oral rehydration solutions are saving many lives. World ORS Day 2023: Simple oral rehydration solutions are saving many lives.

Hyderabad: July 29 is celebrated as World ORS Day every year to highlight the importance of oral rehydration solutions (ORS) and create awareness among people. Acute diarrhea is a leading cause of infant and child mortality in many developing countries. According to the World Health Organization, diarrhea is the second leading cause of death in children under five years of age. World Oral Rehydration Salts Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of oral rehydration salts not only in cases of diarrhea but also in overcoming dehydration.
According to the National Health Portal, ORS stands for oral rehydration solution/salt, which is used to replenish electrolytes in the body. This is the cheapest treatment for diarrhea in humans. If children have diarrhea and vomiting, oral rehydration salts mixed with clean or boiled water can help them rehydrate. With the help of ORS solution, the intestines absorb glucose, water and sodium, thereby protecting the body.

ORS is considered the most effective treatment for acute diarrhea and dehydration. It contains three types of salt including sodium chloride or table salt, trisodium citrate and potassium chloride. The World Health Organization also believes that ORS is essential to keep children healthy during conditions such as diarrhea. According to research, about 1.5 million people die every year in India due to lack of water in the body. ORS can save many lives in times like these.
ORS packs are readily available in all hospitals and pharmacies. But if you don’t have an emergency emergency kit, you can prepare one at home. To do this, mix 30 grams or six teaspoons of sugar and half a teaspoon of salt in a liter of clean (boiled) water, mix well and fill the bottle. The solution should be given to children in the amount of one teaspoon several times a day at short intervals.
Doctors recommend that children under two years of age receive 60 to 125 ml of ORS if they have diarrhea. For children over two years old, this amount should be 250 ml. Children over 12 years of age, adults and the elderly should take 250 to 400 ml of ORS each time they have diarrhea.
