Indications:
Infections due to micro-organisms which are sensitive to ampicillin, and particularly for treating the following types of infection:
- Respiratory – Gynaecological
- E.N.T and mouth – Meningitis
- Renal and uro-genital tract – Septicaemic and endoarcardial
- Digestive and biliary tract
Contra-indications:
Allergy to penicillins and cephalosporins
Patients infected with viruses belonging to the herpes-virus group.
Cautions:
Notify the attending physician in cases of
- Renal impaitment
- History of allergies
- Skin reactions caused by an allergy
- Or if other drugs are being taken concomitantly [particularly allopurinol].
Side-effects:
Allergic reactions: pruritus, urticaria, rashes, Quincke’s oedema.
Digestive disorders: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, candidiasis, stomatitis.
Warnings: if the allergic history is not know, the appearance of any reaction which suggests an allergy to beta-lactums (urticaria, Quincke’s oedema etc…) must result in the treatment being stopped immediately.
Dose:
The usual dose, as detailed on the attending physician’s prescription.
Adult: I.M. route: 1 gram twice a day
I.V. route: 2 to 12 grams per day
Breast-fed infants and children: I.M. route: 50mg/kg/24 hours as 2 injections
I.V. route: 100 to 300mg/kg/24 hours
Instructions for use:
Using syringes fitted with a needle for intramuscular injections, draw the solvent from the vial and add to the bottle though the rubber stopper which should previously have been cleaned with alcohol.
Shake the bottle until the powder has completely dissolved (on average for 2 minutes). Draw in the solution and administer as a deep intramuscular injection.
The total daily dose must be divided up into 2 or 4 injections for each 24-hours period.
Via the intravenous route, this antibiotic can be administered as a slow infusion in isotonic sodium chloride solution or as a slow injection into the infusion tube.
Shelf-life:
36 months from the manufacturing date.
Never use after the expiry date clearly indicated on the outer packaging.
Storage:
Ampicillin Sodium should be kept in a well-closed container and stored at a temperature not exceeding 25℃.
