Popular science: early to bed and early to rise is not easy to depression

The latest data released on the official website of the World Health Organization show that depression is a common mental disease, affecting 264 million people around the world. A new study in the United States shows that for people who are used to going to bed late, if they can advance their bedtime by one hour, they can reduce the risk of depression by 23%.

Previous studies have shown that no matter how long sleep lasts, “night owls” are twice as likely to suffer from depression as those who like to go to bed early and get up early.

Researchers from the broad Institute and other institutions in the United States tracked the sleep of about 840000 people and evaluated some genetic variations in their genes, which may affect people’s work and rest types. The survey shows that 33% of them like to go to bed early and get up early, and 9% are “night owls”. Overall, the average sleep midpoint of these people, that is, the middle point between bedtime and wake-up time, is 3 a.m., go to bed at about 11 p.m. and get up at 6 a.m.

The researchers then tracked the medical records of these people and conducted their survey on the diagnosis of depression. The results showed that people who like to go to bed early and get up early have a lower risk of depression. Studies have not yet determined whether getting up earlier has a further effect on people who get up early, but for those whose sleep midpoint is in the middle or late range, the risk of depression is reduced by 23% every hour before the sleep midpoint. For example, if a person who usually goes to bed at 1 a.m. goes to bed at midnight, and the sleep duration remains the same, the risk can be reduced by 23%. The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association psychiatric volume.

Previous studies have shown that people who get up early receive more light during the day, which will affect hormone secretion and improve their mood. Celine Vettel of the broad Institute, who participated in the study, suggested that if people want to go to bed early and get up early, they can walk or ride to work and dim electronic devices at night to ensure a bright environment during the day and a dark environment at night.

According to the latest information released on the WHO official website, depression is characterized by continuous sadness, lack of interest or fun, which may disturb sleep and appetite. It is one of the main causes of disability in the world. Depression is closely related to health problems such as tuberculosis and cardiovascular disease.
